Alpine Roads

Mountain passes, toll-roads and panoramic views

The Alpine areaꞌs mountain-pass roads certainly have plenty of curves; in some cases they are also rather narrow. So the journey becomes a mini-experience in itself; the higher it twists and turns up the mountain, the more beautiful the view gets.

Around Ehrwald there are lots of beautiful mountain passes and alpine roads that are well worth an excursion.

  • Hahntennjoch (1,894 m)
Driving through the Berwangertal valley into the Lechtal valley, over the Hahntennjoch to Imst, then returning via the highway pass.
  • The Castle Road
From Ehrwald to Füssen; here part of the Romantic Road runs past the royal castles and the baroque Wieskirche church; continue to the Ettal monastery and, via Garmisch-Partenkirchen, return to Ehrwald.
  • Hinterriss-Eng Toll-Road
Going via Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Wallgau and via the toll-charge road into the Alpenpark Karwendel, with its old stocks of maple trees. This journey can be continued via the Achensee lake; then, going via the Inntal valley and the highway pass, you come back to Ehrwald.
  • Arlberg Going through the beautiful Lechtal valley, up the Arlberg mountain and via the Bregenz Forest to Vorarlberg, or via the well-known localities of Lech and St. Anton respectively, down to the Tyrolean Inn valley.
  • Reschen Pass If you want to, make a three-country trip, with a short excursion into Switzerland. You take the highway path, towards Imst; then, shortly before Zams, branch off towards Pfunds. Shortly before the border leading into Switzerland, you could make a little diversion into the Samnaun customs-free zone (CH), before you continue via Nauders and the Reschen pass into Italy.
  • Timmelsjoch Go through the Ötztal valley into Sölden and Hochgurgl, the well-known ski resorts, continuing on the curving mountain-pass road, over the Timmelsjoch and to southern Tyrol.

Excursions into towns/cities

Of course, Innsbruck, Capital of Tyrol Federal State, really should also be on your list of planned excursions. With its lovely Old Town and the ꞌGoldenes Dachlꞌ (a majestic building,) the modern ꞌBergiselꞌ ski-jump ramp, the newly-relocated ꞌCycloramaꞌ (a huge round painting) and the Alpine Zoo - well worth seeing - there is much to discover in Innsbruck.

Not far from Innsbruck there are the Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens - an extraordinary museum, among Austriaꞌs most-visited museums.

Only 22 km from Ehrwald, across the German border, is the beautiful market of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Here you can stroll through a pedestrian zone and appreciate the beauty of the old, historical houses. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is renowned for the annual New Year Ski-Jump, part of top-level skiingꞌs Fours Hills Tournament.

Füssen in Allgäu is also a small town well worth a visit, featuring a historic Old Town, opportunities for shopping, and numerous tourist attractions around and about. Here you can discover a whole lot in one day.
