Family Christian & Margreth Spielmann
with Christina and Andreas

Today’s “Old House“ was built by my grandparents, Josefine and Christian. It was built on a piece of land which my grandfather had inherited from his family.

Christian Spielmann, born in May 1886, came from one of the oldest families of our village and was the 7th of 10 children. He grew up in very poor circumstances. When his father, my great-grandfather, died, he was only 6 years old and my great-grandmother had to take care of 10 children by herself. Like so many other Tyrolean children my grandfather had to make his way to Bavaria to earn the family’s upkeep when still a boy himself.

Christian later became a well-known ski-pioneer, and together with his brother Reinhard, he was one of the first skiing instructors, mountain- and ski guides in Austria.
He went down in the annals of skiing history by winning the German championships 3 times despite tough competition from Nordic countries. The hotel is named after him.

But it was my grandmother who recognised the plot’s favourable location. Josefine laid the foundation for “Spielmann’s guest house”, today’s “Old House”. But due to the economically difficult years that followed, culminating in the second world war, it wasn’t until the 1950’s that the house was modernised to meet growing demands.

In May 1965 my grandfather Christian Spielmann passed away, aged almost 80. Then my mother Marga and my father Hansjörg took over. Between 1970 and 1975 they built today’s “New House” and renovated the whole of the Old House. As far as the design of both the interior and the exterior was concerned they made a special effort to include features typical to our home region and its rural origin.

My grandmother Josefine died in December 1974. Both she and my parents always put the needs of their guests first.

It is now up to us, my wife Margreth, myself and the whole of our staff, to run the hotel with the same sense of tradition, to indulge our guests and make them feel completely at home while staying with us.

Yours Christian Spielmann
