Excursions and surrounging areas

Tyrol’s Zugspitz Arena offers a great deal of interesting sights and places, both in terms of Arts and Culture as well as Nature. All you need to take along is your binoculars, a camera and lots of time!

Setting off from the Zugspitz Arena you will be crossing the mountain pass “Hahntennjoch” (1.894 m)  passing some ancient farms, like those of Uine, Ehrenberg and Hahntennjoch Pfafflar. Throughout the journey there are plenty of opportunities to take breaks and enjoy some breathtaking views. We strongly recommend guests to take a wide-angle lens and an addititional memory chip for their cameras. The journey will take you through the following valleys: Lechtal, Namlostal and Rotlechtal.

Ruins of EhrenbergCastle: 20 km (roundtrip)
Embark on a journey through 700 years of history: Ehrenberg Castle was built in the 16th century. The former fortress and its scenic surroundings have many stories to tell. We also recommend a visit to the new museum on the castle’s grounds. You can dive into a long forgotten world which will come alive again in all sorts of different ways: visitors can try on a real suit of armour, find out how iron turns into gold and learn more about the dark sides of the Middle Ages.

You want to walk on royal grounds for one day? No problem, all you need to do is cross the border to the neighbouring German state of Bavaria. Going via Füssen your first port of call is Neuschwanstein Castle, followed by Hohenschwangau, Steingaden and the Wieskirche (Pilgrimage Church of the Scourged Saviour), a world famous rococo jewel.
Other places not to be missed are Oberammergau, famous for its production of a Passion Play, the Abbey of Ettal and last but not least Linderhof Castle. You will then return to the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena via Garmisch.

Ettal: 70 km (roundtrip)
Another tour to Southern Bavaria: via Garmisch and Oberammergau you will reach Ettal with its picturesque Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, founded by King Ludwig of Bavaria in 1330. The abbey church features magnificent dome paintings and a baroque organ.

Oberammergau: 80 km (roundtrip)
Crossing into Bavaria via Garmisch, Oberammergau is only a stone’s throw away. The town is world famous for its production of a Passion Play which was first performed in 1634 and has been staged once every ten years since.
The village is also known for its long tradition of woodcarving. Other interesting features of Oberammergau are its artistically painted houses and its rococo-style parish church.

Mittenwald: 80 km (roundtrip)
A trip well worth considering no matter whether you are into arts and culture or simply love panoramic views. Mittenwald has been the home of German violin making since 1683. A museum outlining the history and development of violin making is located alongside Mittenwald’s picturesque market square.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen: 50 km (roundtrip)
This is the territory of world champions! Every year the best skiers and skijumpers from Tyrol, Bavaria and countries around the world gather here to compete in international championships. A walk trough the centre of this lively metropolis of winter sports is highly recommended. There you will find a great number of houses featuring the traditional “Lüftlmalerei”, a handicraft method of wall-painting. The subjects of the paintings are mainly of religious character. Garmisch-Partenkirchen is also a great place for shopping.
  • Partnachklamm near Garmisch: a record-breaking 700 metres of spluttering waterfalls, a true wonder of nature. Access via ski stadium Partenkirchen. From there you can proceed by horse-drawn carriage or walk (appr. 30 mins.)
  • Höllentalklamm near Garmisch: a torrent of water rushing through a ruggd gorge. It more than deserves its name. (literal translation from German: “infernal valley gorge”).

Alpin garden Reutte: 60 km (roundtrip)

Only 6 minutes walk from the mountain station of the Reuttener railway

nature lovers and hobby gardeners will step into paradise: at an altitude of 1700 metres they will find a huge garden featuring 480 species of plants including 48 kinds of flowers typical of the Alp region which can only be found very rarely.

Get a close look at more than 200 animals, ride a donkey or spend some time at the Autodrom if you are into more speed!

A journey through the lives of our ancestors: in Glentleiten in Bavaria ( via Garmisch – Kochel – Großweil) you will find farm houses which are made up and furnished in accordance with the orginals in former centuries. In historic workshops visitors can watch blacksmiths, weavers, coopers, ropemakers and saddlers at work. Nice pottery can be bought at “Hafner”.

Petting zoo Bichlbach: Open air museum Glenleiten: 110 km (roundtrip)
Innsbruck: 140 km (roundtrip)
This is a must for every visitor of the Zugspitz Arena. The capital of Tyrol (population: 120.000) is one of the nicest cities of the region. Its location is unique: Innsbruck is surrounded by spectacular mountains such as Nordkette, Patscherkofel, Serles und Axamer Lizum.  Along the way through its medieval centre you will find such sights as Maria-Theresien-Straße, Golden Roof, Hofburg (Imperial Palace) and Hofkirche (Imperial Church) with its famous renaissance-style statues – all part of Austria’s cultural heritage.
Other attractions not to be missed are the new ski jump on mount Isel (Berg Isel), designed by Iraqi-born and London-based star architect Zaha Hadid, Ambras Castle and Innsbruck’s Alpine Zoo.

WoodCarvingSchool Elbigenalp (Lechtal): 110 km (roundtrip)
It’s the only school of its kind in Austria. This is where the most beautiful nativity sets are made and exported to countries all over the world. You will be able to visit the carving workshops and watch the artists at work.

Schwazer Show Mine: 200 km (roundtrip)
The origins of the mine date back to the 16th century. In those days more than 11.000 miners were digging for silver and copper in Schwaz. Thanks to their diligence Schwaz developed into the second largest city in the Austria Empire during the Middle Ages and Austria became one of the richest countries in Europe.

Farmhouse museum Kramsach: 220 km (roundtrip)
Highly recommended for architects, photographers and ethnologists! The farmhouse museum presents a collection of historic farms from different Tyrolean valleys.

Munich: 240 km (roundtrip)
Visitors of the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena shouldn’t miss out on a trip to Munich, the capital of the neighbouring German state of Bavaria. It is one of the most important cultural centres of the Alpine region. Deutsches Museum and Alte Pinakothek are a must, the latter being one of the oldest and most important galleries in the world. Further attractions include the Hofbräuhaus, one of Germany’s oldest and most famous beer halls, Hellabrunn zoological garden, Olympic Park, English Garden as well as Nymphenburg and Schleißheim Castles.

Swarovski Crystal Worlds (Watten): 180 km (roundtrip)
One of the most visited attractions in Austria. The Crystal Worlds present visitors with a unique exhibition experience centred around the theme of crystal. The interior has just been completely re-designed by André Heller. The new Crystal Worlds shop spreads across an area of 800 square metres. Here Swarovski presents its immensely diverse range of products – a truly dazzling experience!

Tannheimertal: 45 km (roundtrip)
A landscape which will not cease to amaze you! The idyllic Tannheimertal near Reutte is a nature reserve just waiting to be discovered.

Ötzidorf and Stuibenfall (Ötztal): 120 km (roundtrip)
After the discovery of “Oetzi”, the man from the perpetual ice, the Ötztal, a beautiful valley in the Austrian Alps, had gained a new attraction. In the medieval Ötzi village you will get a good idea of how Tyroleans lived during the New Stone age.  After that a detour to Stuibenfall near Umhausen is highly recommended. It’s Tyrol’s highest waterfall (150 metres).

Rattenberg: 220 km (roundtrip)
The medieval town on the Inn river used to be world famous for its glass making. It is the smallest town in the country but well worth a visit. The Kisslinger glass blowing manufacture offers a unique opportunity to see glass blowers, glass engravers and glass painters at work.
